Turkana county reported its first Covid-19 case on Sunday in Kakuma refugee camp and it is also treating 25 cases of cholera.
Health and Sanitation executive Jane Ajele said the county is battling to curb the spread of both diseases in a "double war".
Of the 25 reported cholera cases, six patients have been treated and discharged. Fifty immediate contacts have been traced and treated and 400 water purification tablets distributed.
An intense search for more cholera cases is underway. Cholera is far from unknown in Turkana.
Fifteen villages in Morungole sublocation have been given water purification tablets and residents are receiving education on health and sanitation.
“The twin outbreaks of Covid-19 and cholera are both serious. We're fighting a double war and water and sanitation are priorities," Ajele said.
Turkana is Kenya's 29th county to confirm a Covid-19 case.
“A 32-year-old Somali national as a registered refugee at Kakuma camp has tested positive for the coronavirus," the Health CEC said.
The patient had travelled from Kakuma to Eastleigh, Nairobi, supposedly to evacuate his 31-year-old sister and her one and a half-year-old child, Ajele said.
