Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron will on Christmas host a bash for street urchins and poor families living in slum areas.

The move was to ensure that the less fortunate in society are not left out during the festive season when everybody comes together for merry-making.

Oron, who was distributing foodstuff to residents of Railways and Kaloleni-Shaurimoyo, said the Christmas luncheon targets the less fortunate, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The legislator also made donations in Obunga, Kondele and Nyawita.

He pointed out that he intends to use the occasion to interact with the constituents and to thank them for having voted for him.

The food donations by the MP in the target areas mainly slums will benefit 20,000 families.

“We have been doing this even before I ventured into elective politics. Now that they have also honoured me with this seat I will ensure that I give back,” Oron said.

He added, “Let’s always remember that Christmas should serve as a day of giving to the less fortunate in remembrance of Jesus Christ”.

At the same time, Oron challenged other elected leaders in various positions to lend a hand to the needy saying there was a blessing in giving than to receive.

While in the sprawling Nyalenda estate, the MP announced that he will pay monthly NHIF premiums to the elderly.

“Beginning next year all the elderly and our senior citizens will have NHIF cover paid on their behalf through my office. We want them to go to the hospital and get the best medical attention without worrying about how to offset their medical bills,” Oron said.

The beneficiaries will be part of the group of those that have been benefiting from the initiative that he started before he was elected to parliament.

Last year, the politician donated food to more than 2,600 vulnerable people including street urchins in Kisumu through the feeding programme.

The beneficiaries were drawn from estates in Kisumu Central as part of his Christmas gift to the less fortunate families.

Oron said the feeding program is an annual exercise to enable needy people to celebrate the festive season.
