Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga wants political opponents to stop blaming her over the crisis which has marred the health sector in the county.

More than 1,200 Homa Bay health workers downed tools two weeks ago and paralysed services in public health facilities.

Over 1,500 civil servants from all sectors have also downed their tools following delayed payment of April salaries.

But Wanga now claims some politicians are linking her with the problems bedevilling the health sector. The Woman Rep is currently seeking governorship on an ODM ticket.

Speaking on Friday during a meeting with some leaders of the health workers at Genowa centre in Homa Bay town, Wanga and running mate Oyugi Magwanga said they have not yet been elected into the county leadership for them to take responsibility.

“Let’s not misconstrue Wanga-the Homa Bay governorship aspirant as already governor. I am still the Homa Bay Woman Representative and can’t play governor roles,” Wanga said.

The health workers were led by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairman in Nyanza Kevin Osuri.

The legislator argued that her current role is to oversee the national government, but not the Homa Bay government.

“We shouldn’t play politics with the matter. My oversight roles remain with the national government,” she said.

They asked their opponents to avoid confusing residents as they promised to transform the health sector after being elected as Homa Bay governor and deputy in the August 9 general polls.

“Our administration will ensure health facilities are equipped and health workers’ welfare is well taken care of,” she added.

Osuri said they were still talking with their employer to address the stalemate which continues to impede health services in the county.

“We were in a consultative meeting with Wanga on how the health sector should be handled in future,” Osuri said.

Magwanga said their meeting with the health workers has enabled them to understand how to handle the health sector when elected to power.

“We have learnt actions we’ll take to avert such problems should we get elected,” Magwanga said.

The health workers still maintained their strike will continue until their grievances are addressed.
