Kiambu Governor James Nyoro has said the recent audit done in his county is politically motivated.

Nyoro said the audit was done between July 1 2019 and June 30 2020 when he was yet to be inaugurated as the governor.

He said he welcomes the audit as it is the only way to be accountable to Kenyans but said the correct context of the audit should be known to Kenyans.

“Just two days ago, I was celebrating two years in office because I was inaugurated on January 31, 2020. The six months audited I was not in control of the county,” he said.

Speaking during a tree-planting ceremony at Ondiri Swamp, Kiambu county on Wednesday, he said the audit is being pushed by people with malicious intentions and without facts.

“We have seen the report being analyzed in the local media and they fail to mention that I was not the governor for the six months period from February 1, 2020 to June 30, 2020,” he said.

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu released an audit report of the County of Kiambu that found the county could not account for a number of expenditures as well as some luxurious spending.

“At least Sh19.52 million was spent on airtime and bundles while there were several unaccounted spending like the exaggerated cost of goods and services, irregular procurement, questionable huge pending bills amounting to Sh1.09 billion and Sh1.3 billion stalled projects,” the report said.

Nyoro said he is being targeted alongside other governors who have the same political alignment as him.

“You will see between now and Friday, they want to serialise Kiambu, Nakuru, Nyandarua and Laikipia. That is what they have planned because we have a political dispensation different from the others,” he said.

He asked that politics be left out of the management of counties.

“We will be answerable for the queries we are asked as county governors when audits are done, and let us be asked the right questions and let’s keep politics out of this because we will mislead Kenyans,” he said.
