Kisumu Senator Fred Outa has said he is determined to revamp the sugarcane sector that Muhoroni people depend on.

The gubernatorial hopeful on Saturday met several boda boda officials and people he identified as his agents in the polling stations.

He said he is rooting for the payments of sucrose content to farmers instead of the weight.

Outa said farmers are losing a lot after toiling in the farms.

He said what is derived from the cane should be wholesomely paid to the farmers.

“Our factories derive a lot from the cane, ranging from sugar, molasses and burgas, all these the farmer is just paid for the weight of the cane,” Outa said.

He said farmers are bound to fetch good money and embrace cane farming if they are paid based on the sucrose content in their cane.

Outa said cane farmers should not be abandoned as they wait for the implementation of leasing of the factories, which is facing resistance in the corridors of justice.

He said it was time the county supported farmers as they undergo challenges, which is pushing them out of farming sugarcane.

The farmers lamented at the neglect from the Governor Anyang Nyong'o administration who promised to develop light rails within the sugar belt to help in transporting cane but failed to implement.

Currently, farmers are incurring huge losses in the transport of cane to the factories due to dilapidated roads, despite paying tax for the maintenance of roads.

The Kisumu gubernatorial race has attracted different candidates including former Kisumu Central MP and CAS Ken Obura.
