Vihiga health workers have suspended their strike after the county government agreed to meet their demands.

The workers went on strike on Tuesday morning after their seven-day notice lapsed. The strike was, however, suspended after the Kenya National Union of Nurses-Vihiga branch officials held discussions with Governor Wilber Ottichilo in the afternoon. The county chief agreed to sort out the issues they had raised.

The health workers cited lack of promotions and unpaid salaries for January and February this year as some of the grounds for their strike.

After the meeting, Ottichilo told the healthcare workers that their concerns on promotions would be dealt with in a fortnight by the County Public Service Board (CPSB).

“The issues you have raised here are real. We know they have affected us in various ways, but as the County Public Service Board has notified us, we are sure that they will be implemented within 14 days,” he said.

Ottichilo further said none of the staff will be victimised as they report back to work, saying they were only exercising their constitutional right to picket.

Kenya National Union of Nurses Vihiga branch chairman Zadock Miheso urged his colleagues to report back on duty awaiting the public service board’s move.

“Governor, we are always ready to deliver services to our people, let your administration be fair to us.  You should not wait until we go to the streets for our cry to be heard,” he said.
