More than 15,000 families in Nyamira county will benefit from free NHIF cover that will be catered for by the county government.
Deputy Governor James Gesami launched the registration exercise on Monday at Nyamaiya Health Centre in Nyamaiya ward.
The beneficiaries will be registered by use of biometric system across the county by NHIF officials.
During the launch, Gesami said the county leadership seeks to prioritise health services saying residents' health is a basic requirement.
“As a county government, we have come up with this idea of providing medical covers for vulnerable families because we value the health of our residents. All we have done is to ensure every household has a medical cover for every member,” Gesami said.
The NHIF indigent coverage is a programme under the Universal Health Coverage agenda of the national government, covering over one million most vulnerable individuals and their households countrywide.
Health executive Gladys Momanyi urged those who have not registered for NHIF services to come out and do so saying it is important for their healthcare needs.
“We encourage residents to get the cover because it is good for their healthcare needs especially when there are emergencies and they cannot afford cash for treatment,” Momanyi said.
Health chief officer Jack Magara said every subcounty will have a specific date to have the details of the beneficiaries taken especially the biometric details.
“We call upon those who were identified for the same to avail themselves at their various subcounties so that their details can be filled as required for them to start benefiting from the cover. This is a programme by the NHIF, national government and county government of Nyamira for residents who cannot afford medical services,” Magara said.
