Khunyangu Hospital eye care unit has received Sh5 million worth of medical equipment from the Busia county government.

The support comes a month after the facility received a Sh3.5 million donation of medical equipment from Fred Hollows Foundation.

Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said with adequate infrastructure in place, an eye care clinic will be operational at Khunyangu subcounty hospital in a weeks’ time.

"This will reduce the cost of finding these important services," Mulomi said.

The county administration has completed a theatre, an X-ray and a new 40-bed capacity ward within the hospital. It is in the process of constructing a mortuary.

This will be a big boost to residents of Butula subcounty who had to seek the services at Busia or Alupe Referral hospitals.

Mulomi said that the health facility in Bumala B where a medical training college is being constructed will be upgraded to a subcounty hospital this month.

He appealed to Busia residents to seek medical assistance whenever they experience difficulties in breathing and refrain from self-medication that may result in death during this Covid-19 time.

Mulomi urged teachers to come out in large numbers to ensure that they get vaccinated as the next batch of vaccines arrives in the county.

Mulomi warned that the Delta variant is deadly and doesn't present common symptoms.

"I, therefore, urge teachers to ensure they are vaccinated against Covid-19 to protect themselves and our children," he added.

He encouraged the residents to continue observing Covid-19 protocols in the midst of the third wave of the Delta variant.
