Kisii Governor James Ongwae on Sunday told residents not to use the extension of curfew hours to breach Covid-19 protocols.
Ongwae told residents to use the opportunity to conduct their business but close in the required time to avoid breaking the Ministry of Health guidelines.
He said the current wave is life-threatening and there is a need for individual responsibility.
“I am urging our people not to wait to be told what they are supposed to do in protecting themselves,” Ongwae told the Star on the phone.
He reminded residents that keeping social distance and washing hands is not a punishment but for their safety.
The county boss said blame games will not be allowed from those who are found in the wrong, adding that law enforcers have the mandate to enforce the protocols.
“Those who will be found in the wrong by the law enforcers should not blame them but take responsibility,” Ongwae said.
Kisii and Nyamira counties have been recording high cases in the past weeks.
The governor urged schools management to ensure all protocols are observed to keep learners safe.
“I am urging school heads and principals not to take the safety of learners for granted. They should put measures in place for their sake,” the governor said.
Last week, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe eased curfew hours to 10pm from 7pm in 13 lake region counties that had been handed stricter rules over a surge of cases.
Ongwae wished well learners joining Form 1 and encouraged them to maintain discipline and work hard in class.
“I am optimistic that despite all challenges schools face in admitting high numbers of learners, I hope school managers are going to do their best in ensuring that students are comfortable,” the governor said.
