Migori police are holding two vehicles at Kamagambo police station after they impounded bhang worth Sh1.94million in street value on Saturday.
Police also found a cartoon of white paper used to role bhang in small quantities for sale to users.
Rongo police boss Peter Okiring’ said officers on patrol along Kisii-Sirare road were alerted when a probox vehicle they tried to stop sped off towards Rongo town.
“The officers gave a chase and the vehicle took a turn from the tarmac road at Kanga Machine and disappeared in sugarcane plantation,” Okiring’ said.
He said the officers trailed the vehicle from marks on the road and cornered it inside a plantation where they also found another probox vehicle with five sacks of bhang.
“They were trying to change the haul to another vehicle, the suspects who heard police approaching ran away leaving the bhang and the two vehicles behind,” Okiring’ said.
The two vehicles were towed to the station where the bhang was also taken as police launched investigations.
“We have launched investigations to find the owner of the drugs and vehicles, we will rely on cooperation from members of the public to apprehend the suspects,” he said.
Police, he said, are on high alert as they try prevent smuggling of bhang from Tanzania which is rampant.
