A new security team in Homa Bay is educating residents and ensuring they adhere to Covid-19 protocols.

If they don't, they will be arrested and fined. It is uncertain if quarantine will be imposed.

The team comprises police and the grassroots national government administrators such as chiefs and their assistants.

The team is also working with Homa Bay county government enforcement officers.

Homa Bay county police commander Esther Seroney said each subcounty has its own team charged with ensuring residents understand the rules for preventing the disease.

The government has said lack of adherence to the Covid-19 rules is a major reason the disease has spread within the community.

Speaking to journalists, the police boss said they have intensified their work because the disease is spreading .

Homa Bay has recorded more than 120 cases.

Seroney urged residents to wear masks, keep social distance, wash hands and avoid crowds.

The police officer said they will arrest and charge people violating rules.

“We’ll be proceeding with our surveillance. Let people comply with the rules to avoid being arrested,” she said.

Last week, Homa Bay Health executive Richard Muga said the county may become a hotspot for infections should residents ignore preventive measures.

More than 30 people have been arrested because they failed to comply with the law.

Seroney said some people are in crowds and some some don't use masks to cover their noses and mouths, they just let masks hang.

“Anybody who fails to comply will be punished by fines,” she said.

She warned that more people would be arrested in the coming days if they fail to adhere to rules meant to contain the spread of the virus.
