Governor James Ongwae on Thursday ordered that all buildings in Kisii town be painted before Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

He said the event to be held in Gusii Stadium will put the region on the world map, hence the need for a facelift.

Ongwae directed that buildings that face the stadium be painted first, warning that action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

“I am issuing an executive order to owners of buildings in Kisii town to move with speed and paint them before Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be held at the Gusii Stadium on October 20,” Ongwae said in his office.

He also directed hoteliers to provide their physical address and contact online so guests can locate them with ease before, during and after the ceremony.

“The county is going to host a number of dignitaries from across the globe. That is why hotel owners need to develop a website where they will indicate where they are situated and their contacts to enable guests who will be attending the occasion to access them with ease,” Ongwae said.

The county chief said his officers will help the owners to develop the website to save time and ensure visitors can start booking rooms in time.

President Kenyatta will preside over the ceremony. Businesspeople plan to cash in on the event to boost their incomes, with the fete coming as the Covid-19 crisis had left the economy and businesses in tatters.

The governor said his administration has prepared well to host the event, noting that the stadium has been completed to a high standard.

“My administration is working closely with officials of the national government in preparations for the auspicious occasion,” he said.

“I expect officers charged with the responsibility of garbage collection in town and its environs ensure that cleanliness is maintained.”

The county was expected to host Madaraka Day in June but that could not happen because of Covid-19.
