The construction of the Sh4billion Lake Victoria Basin Commission headquarters is set to begin in January next year.
The commission's executive secretary Ali Matano on Tuesday the headquarters will be put up in a 2.8-acre land donated by the government. The land is in Kisumu.
The commission is tasked with protecting the region's fragile ecosystem. It currently operates from the Prosperity Building which houses the Kisumu county government offices.
Matano said preparation for the development is almost complete.
“The preparation is in the final stages with the department of public works expected to handover the designs of the headquarters in the coming days,” Matano said.
He spoke at the site during a tree-planting drive to mark the 20th anniversary of the East Africa Community.
Matano said the commission was keen on eradicating water hyacinth from Lake Victoria.
