More than 10 families slept in the cold for the second night on Saturday after their houses were razed in Remba Island in Suba, Homa Bay county.
The fire, whose cause remains unknown, gutted more than 20 houses and nine shops belonging to the families.
Remba Island beach management unit chairman Okoth Mamra said the fire broke out at 12:30am on Saturday. No one was injured but all household items were burnt.
“The devastating fire started in one of the rental houses and spread to other structures,” Mamra said.
Speaking to the Star on the phone, Mamra said the wind made it difficult t put out the fire.
Residents have asked the county government and well-wishers for help.
“We’re also asking the county government to buy us a fire fighting machine for future breakouts,” Mamra said.
Yesterday, Homa Bay beach management unit chairman Edward Oremo said the affected families were suffering in the cold. “Not all of them can be accommodated in other houses. Majority still sleep in the cold,” Oremo said.
He said more than Sh3.5million worth of property was burnt.
Suba North OCPD Charles Mwangi said investigation to establish the cause of the fire were ongoing. He said they were evaluating the damage caused.
“We’re grateful nobody lost their life," Mwangi said.
