Police in Homa Bay have recovered a firearm and arrested suspects accused of attacking their colleague on Thursday.

The gun was found on Thursday afternoon after an intensive search lasting more than eight hours.

Police said the Ceska pistol had 15 bullets which were not recovered.

County police commander Esther Seroney said they did not also find the gun's magazine.

“The magazine might have dropped during the fight between the officer and his attackers,” Seroney said.

The police commander said some boda boda operators led them to the house where they found the suspects and the gun.

They arrested Steve Omondi, 22, and two others whom police suspect colluded to execute the act.

The gun was found in Omondi’s house at Makongeni estate in Homa Bay town.

“We’re detaining Omondi and other two suspects who were using the same motorcycle when the incident occurred,” Seroney said.

“The suspects are at Homa Bay police cells and they will be arraigned as soon as investigations are complete.”

On Friday, the assaulted officer was still at Homa Bay Referral Hospital.

He sustained two cuts on the head.

Seroney said the officer, a corporal, was posted to the station two months ago.

On Thursday, a group of youths thronged the police station demanding to lynch the suspects.

“They want police to believe that Homa Bay boda boda operators are gangsters. We’ll not allow them to destroy our business,” one of the youths shouted.
