A gold miner has died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning and two others survived.
The three were pumping water out of a mine in Bukira, Kuria West, Migori, on Monday evening.
“The miners had drained water from the mine, but their
colleagues noticed something was amiss when they did not
return to the surface,"
colleague Charles Mwita said.
The mine tragedy, the first reported this year, shocked the Migori gold belt.
Rescuers pulled the three miners to the surface but realised that one had died as they administered first aid. The body was taken to Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary.
January and February are peak months for mining.
