Garissa politicians allied to Azimio la Umoja have called for peaceful campaigns ahead of the August 9 General Election.

They have accused some leaders of creating violence against their competitors during campaigns.

The leaders spoke on Sunday in Dadaab during a campaign rally for former governor Nathif Jama, who is seeking to recapture the seat on the ODM ticket.

The leaders led by Senator Abdul Haji want the county and regional security officials to intervene and assure aspirants and their supporters of safety.

Haji said every politician has a right to sell their manifesto in any part of the country.

Jama, on his part, said it was unfortunate for some people try to prevent leaders from seeking votes in certain areas in the county.

"We have freedom of expression and everyone should be given the opportunity to sell their agenda to the electorate without interference from any quarter," he said.

Jama said every candidate should be able to campaign anywhere without fear.

"As Azimio brigade, we are campaigning in every part of the country," he said.

Former National Assembly deputy speaker Farah Maalim, who is also vying for Dadaab MP, said Jama is best suited of the governor aspirants.

He said he will bring development to residents.

"We must reject all kinds of divisive politics based on religion, tribe, clan or class. Let us look at the manifestos of the aspirants and vet them based on what they will do for us," Maalim said.

He said residents should avoid any form of violence during the election campaigns.

Lagdera MP Mohamed Hire said the government should block any candidate inciting people to violence from contesting in the election.

"Over the past weeks we have witnessed political violence during rallies in Balambala and Bodhai subcounties. I am calling for political tolerance," Hire said.

He said they want a peaceful Garissa.

"Using violence will not bring you votes."

Dadaab MP Mohamed Dahiye said the current Garissa government has failed to deliver services to the people despite being allocated billions over the years.
