A 14-year-old girl drowned at the Waita rock catchment dam in Kitui as she drew water on Monday evening.

The girl was poised to sit her KCPE examination in two months’ time at Waita Primary School in Mwingi Central, Kitui.

An a uncle of the deceased, Caxton Mutambuki who is a gospel singer, said the tragedy struck at around 5pm when the girl, who was playing at edge of the dam slipped and fell into the waters and drowned.

Mutambuki said the girl had gone to fetch water with a friend after returning home from school.

He said local divers were not around to help save her. He said the divers arrived too late and only helped retrieve the body.

The police took the body to Mwingi Level 4 Hospital mortuary.

Mutambuki urged the government to move with speed and forestall further deaths by erecting a perimeter fence around the dam.

He said at least six people had drowned at the dam.
