Six people drown in four days in Mwala subcounty

Three of the victims drowned separately on Wednesday

Six people including an 11- year -old girl have drowned in Mwala subcounty in the last four days.

Mwala assistant county commissioner Damaris Mutanu said three of the victims drowned separately on Wednesday.

In the first incident, the minor, a Grade three pupil drowned in the afternoon as she tried to cross River Kyaimu in Miu location.

In the second incident, the body of Teresia Mbithe was found floating in a water pan at Mutuyu village in Mwala location at 8 am.

Mutanu said Mbithe had been reported missing by her family at around 4 pm Tuesday.

In the third incident, the body of an unidentified man was found partially buried in the sand at Munzu River within Mbiuni location.

The man is suspected to have drowned Tuesday night as he crossed the river.

On December 26, 32- year -old Muli Thathi drowned in River Miu, in Yathui division as he tried to help a friend cross the flooded river.

They were drunk when the incident occurred.

His body is yet to be recovered.

On Christmas night, 30- year- old Joshua Kula was swept away together with his car by raging waters at River Mithini near Masii town at around 9.30 pm.

Kula was driving home from a nearby resort accompanied by a friend when the incident happened.

The friend however managed to swim to safety.

His body was recovered Tuesday after a two-day search while the car was retrieved around 200 metres downstream from where the incident occurred.

Mutanu raised alarm over the drowning incidents and urged residents to desist from crossing flooded rivers.

“I appeal to residents to be patient when they find raging waters until the levels go down,” she said.

Mutanu asked residents with farm ponds and water pans to secure them to prevent children from drowning.

“Parents should be cautious,” she said.
