A man died as four others were rescued while removing silt inside a 30-feet borehole in the Kyuu area of Mbooni.

The Monday 3pm incident occurred when the deceased, Mwaniki Kimeu, suddenly became weak while he was inside cleaning the borehole, his four colleagues were outside the well.

Efforts to retrieve Kimeu, who was still alive inside the borehole, were unfruitful.

"The root cause of his death has been established as lack of oxygen,” said Makueni police commander Joseph ole Naipeyan, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday Morning.

Naipeyan said the police, with the help of residents, rescued two people who had also gone inside the borehole to rescue Kimeu.

“I heard screams coming from the borehole and found three of the five people whom I had contracted to do the job helplessly trying to rescue colleagues,” said Florence Kivuva, the owner of the borehole.

The four men are in stable condition after receiving treatment at Mbooni Subcounty Hospital.

Kimeu's body was moved to the hospital's mortuary.
