Residents of Harajabs in Fafi subcounty will soon have access to water supply through a project by the Garissa county government in partnership with the Water Sector Trust Fund.

The project will provide much-needed relief after decades of suffering.

Garissa county secretary Abdi Ali on Tuesday said the project was nearly 90 per cent complete. He said residents will have a permanent water supply.

He spoke during an inspection tour of the project. Ali was accompanied by Water executive Issa Oyow.

He said providing clean water to residents in all the subcounties is the county government's top priority.

For 16 years now, residents have been depending on water supplied by trucks.

"The area is remarkably known as good grazing field for cattle, goats and camels hence attracting a huge population of pastoralists," Oyow said.

He said water provision was part of Governor Ali Korane's efforts to reduce water trucking centres in all the six subcounties of Garissa.

The Water executive said the project's scope consists of a new borehole, pump house, two latrines, water kiosk, livestock troughs, reticulation system of 1.6km pipeline and steel tank.

Two weeks ago, Korane said his administration’s mission of providing residents with clean and safe water is on course.

Speaking during the groundbreaking of Tawakal, Rahma and Mzuri Water Supply at Maramtu site, Korane said his administration has successfully sunk 71 boreholes across the county in the last three years.

“We are more than ever determined to ensure our people access clean and quality water in all corners of our county. It is not something that can be done overnight, but with resources, we will surely achieve this goal. All that is required is patience,” Korane said.

The water supply project that consists of three boreholes, a 300,000-litre elevated steel tank and a 7km water pipeline is set to end the perennial water shortage in seven settlements in Garissa town, including Tawakal, Rahma and Mzuri.
