Nasa members in the Garissa county assembly yesterday picked a new Minority leader to replace Abakaile MCA Mohammed Ali Sheikh who lost his seat after a long court battle.

Dadaab ward rep Mohamed Abdi of ODM was picked by 14 members of the coalition to take over from youthful Sheikh who is set to seek re-election.

Garissa county speaker Ahmed Abass on Friday declared the Abakaile ward seat vacant following a successful petition by Abdiwahab Sheikh that went all the way to Appeals Court.

The IEBC is yet to announce the by-election date, the campaign time as well as the nomination date.

Abdi, who is in the county assembly for a second term, said he will rally Nasa members in shaping and keeping in check the county administration.

“I want to thank and appreciate the coalition members who saw it wise to pick me as their Leader of Minority in the assembly. I want to assure them that I will not let them down in making sure the assembly works for the people of the county as expected of them,” he told the Star.
