ENVIRONMENT Secretary Judi Wakhungu yesterday urged people living around water catchment areas to uproot eucalyptus and gum trees.
She said the tree species should be replaced with environmentally friendly one. Wakhungu said bamboo trees can do better if planted around water catchment areas.
She was addressing residents of Isiolo on Saturday after launching several projects undertaken by the Ewaso Ng’iro North development Authority (Ennda).
Wakhungu said experts have warned of the adverse effect of the gum trees. She said gum tree interferes with water catchment areas.
Wakhungu hailed the agency for its addressing environmental challenges facing Isiolo residents. Ennda is undertaking the school greening programme on behalf of the national government at Isiolo School for the Deaf.
Wakhungu also visited Burat 2 Borehole Project undertaken by Ennda with funds from the Africa Development Bank.
