Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu is now suggesting that all gubernatorial aspirants must undergo an integrity test to ensure the capital remains in safe hands.

Kananu spoke in Dagoretti on Tuesday.

She said the test should be made mandatory by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission before an aspirant is cleared to run.

“We want to have leaders with no scandals or integrity issues because our people need clean leaders in office," she said.

Kananu further bashed aspirants who have been using billboards to campaign saying they fear door to door campaigns but send goons to disrupt their opponents' rallies.

“We don’t want leaders who just campaign using posters and send goons to attack incumbent leaders in Nairobi,” she said.

Kananu said "If you know you have any scandal or integrity issues please step aside. People who handle public funds must be transparent with good governance skills."

Former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru said good development for will only come from leaders of integrity.

He said those seeking to reclaim the seat on  the Jubilee ticket should endeavour to guard public funds.

"I support the proposal to have IEBC clear aspirants who have undergone and passed mandatory integrity tests," Waweru said.

Nairobi gubernatorial race has exposed deep divisions in the Azimio camp, as several aspirants have declared they will be vying for the position and openly criticise each other.

ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna said that there is no room for corrupt leaders in Nairobi.

“We want people of integrity with no criminal record. Raila himself is known to be a person full of integrity and modesty. You cannot be corrupt and join Azimio,” he said.

Sifuna made it clear that Raila wants to leave a legacy of a corrupt-free government, so no aspirants with integrity issues will be given the nomination ticket.

“Raila has already pledged that his government will jail the corrupt. So If you are corrupt, don’t come looking for a nomination ticket in Azimio because we will take you to jail,” he said.

So far ODM has one candidate in the governor race, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who launched his bid last year.

In the Jubilee, Kananu, businesswoman Agnes Kagure and Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry boss Richard Ngatia are eying the seat.

A fierce power battle is set to be witnessed in Nairobi between ODM and  Jubilee as parties heads towards the April nominations.
