- Wanyonyi will battle it out with former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru and Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.
- Bishop Wanjiru has expressed confidence that she will become Nairobi’s first elected female governor.
Politicians eyeing the Nairobi governor's seat are now three after Westlands legislator Tim Wanyonyi joined the race.
Wanyonyi will battle it out with former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru and Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja who have publicly declared they want to become the next county boss.
On Saturday, the MP received a huge boost when he was endorsed by Ida Odinga, wife of Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga .
"He has the dream, let him dream and we can help him make it come true,” she said.
Ida spoke in Westlands where she presided over a graduation ceremony at Kibondeni College of Catering and Hospitality in Muthangari.
Throwing her support behind Wanyonyi, Ida described him as an organised and intelligent person since they worked together in the Kenya Paraplegic Organisation.
Having served Westlands for 15 years both as a councillor and an MP, Wanyonyi feels it's time he takes his leadership skills to the big office in town at City Hall.
The brother to Ford Kenya leader and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula believes he has done all he had wanted to do in Westlands—empowered women and the youth, refurbished and equipped schools, invested in education and worked with the police to improve security.
Last December when it was assumed Nairobi would be heading for a by-election after Sonko's impeachment, Jubilee Party fronted Building Bridges Initiative secretariat co-chairman Dennis Waweru and businesswoman Agnes Kagure for the post.
However, little has been heard from the two on whether they are still interested in the Nairobi governor race.
Senator Sakaja believes Nairobi would be better and safer in his hands as he won't be a one-man show, will hire a city manager, get along with State House and permanently solve problems with transit and other master plans.
He said Evans Kidero was too technical while impeached Mike Sonko was too political and squandered goodwill.
Bishop Wanjiru has expressed confidence that she will become Nairobi’s first elected female governor.
“Mbele iko sawa. Chama ni UDA, Rais ni Ruto, Nairobi Governor is Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, ukipenda Mama na Kazi. Nairobi is a done deal in heaven and on earth. If God is for me no one can be against me! In this race we lead, others can follow," she said.
Politicians eyeing political seats in Nairobi have appeared to be biding their time, with less than an year left to the 2022 General Election.
At the county assembly, the 85 elected MCAs are weighing whether to defend their seats or move to the National Assembly.
Last week, majority lLeader Abdi Hassan declared he will be in the running for the Embakasi Central parliamentary seat under the handshake party which will be supported by Raila and President Kenyatta.
Umoja One MCA Mark Mugambi has made it known he will defend his seat under the United Democratic Alliance Party that is associated with Deputy President William Ruto.
Political analyst and lawyer Danston Omari told the Star Nairobi politics will pick up after the presidential contest takes shape.
“Nairobi is a very technical place to show your interest [early] because the presidential pattern is not clear, whether it is Deputy President William Ruto or ODM leader Raila Odinga. They will give direction to Nairobi,” he said .
Omari said President Uhuru Kenyatta's interests in the county and the role of the NMS are other factors to consider.
