The contentious Fedha/Nyayo Estate Gate B road is not part of the Nairobi Regeneration Programme, records at Kenya Urban Roads Authority indicate.

This sharply contradicts the position taken by Governor Mike Sonko that the road is under the Regeneration Programme, which is currently doing 38 city roads.

The 1km stretch has been in a deplorable state for years, hence inconveniencing thousands of residents who, on numerous occasions, have held demos to demand action. Their pleas have borne no fruit.

The Regeneration Programme is a joint initiative by the national and Nairobi governments. The national government, through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura), contributed Sh1.97 billion under the Road Maintenance Levy Fund, while the county was to contribute Sh900 million to improve roads.

The deteriorating condition of Fedha-Nyayo road has been linked to poor drainage and illegal roadside car washes.

On Wednesday, Governor Sonko, in a statement, claimed the road is part of the programme spearheaded by Kura.

"For information, the rehabilitation of Eastlands roads, including the Fedha Road, is under Kenya Urban Roads Authority, to be done with the financial contribution of Nairobi City County,” he said.

Sonko said the county had paid Sh800 million to the authority for the project.

“We made a commitment to pay Sh900 million to Kura as part of our contribution towards the rehabilitation of diverse roads, including Fedha Road under the programme by the authority in the last Financial Year 2018-19. As of July 12, 2019, we had paid Sh800 million to Kura,” he stated.

But according to the authority’s records, the road linking Fedha to Nyayo Estate Gate B is not part of the listed 38 roads.

“In the last one year, Kura has partnered with the Nairobi county government under the Regeneration Programme, which covered a list of 38 roads. Unfortunately, the county government and area MP did not include Fedha Road in the list of roads under improvement, ” Kura document reads.

The area is under Embakasi East constituency represented in the National Assembly by Babu Owino. According to the document, Kura has not received any funding from the county government for Fedha Road even during Phase Two of the programme.
