City Hall's crackdown on illegal billboards will continue until all outdoor and advertising companies are compliant, Lands executive Charles Kerich told the Star yesterday.

Two billboards were pulled down on Monday. One had been erected outside Nairobi School and the other at the Westlands roundabout.

“In some cases, the owners pulled down other billboards to erect theirs. Others have been erected without the county’s approval,” Kerich said.

City Hall loses more than Sh15 million every month from the illegal erection of billboards.

There are about 860 billboards in the city. Of the number, 630 are captured in the county’s database. The rest have been erected illegally.

Kerich said the county is owed more than Sh227 million by outdoor advertising companies.

In the last four financial years, land rates have been the largest revenue stream, generating Sh10.27 billion. However, by mid 2018-19 financial year (on December 31, 2018), revenue collected from this stream was Sh387.9 million. This put the performance on the annual target at 11 per cent.

The county has also started clamping houses whose owners are yet to clear rates arrears.

Among those clamped on Monday were Maendeleo ya Wanawake House and Utalii House.

Maendeleo House has arrears of Sh800,000.
