Mwingi voters complain over missing names in voter register

Residents say if the issue is not addressed quickly it may lead to low voter turnout

Mwingi town was on Tuesday morning deserted and shops closed as voters turned out in large numbers to cast their ballotsin different polling centres.

However, at Musila garden polling station, voters had concerns while others lauded IEBC for conducting a smooth exercise.

Mwikya Mundala, a resident, said he casts his vote in Mwingi town, Musila gardens polling centre, but initially his name was missing in the list provided by IEBC.

He also added that the issue of voters missing their names should be addressed quickly to avert a looming voter apathy.

John Mumo Musyoka said the process is very slow and may culminate in late hours the issue of those missing their names on the list is not addressed.

"I arrived here at 6 am and I haven't voted four hours later after the station opened because my name is still missing," he said.

Mumo said he wanted to vote early and go back to work but he now opts to skip the exercise because it's time-consuming.

Mwikali Mutambuki, another resident said the exercise was smooth on her side and she has faith the IEBC that they will conduct a free and fair election.

Mwingi Central constituency has 225 polling centres, according to constituency returning officer James Mbai.

Mbai said all election materials were distributed to all the stations and voting began at exactly 6 am in most polling centres.

He said that all polling centres have two police officers and security has been tightened to ensure the voting exercise is peaceful.

"During the training, we directed our officials to ensure that the elderly, pregnant women, lactating mothers and persons living with disability are given first priority," he said.

Mwingi Central has 74,231 registered voters, Mwingi West(57,138), Mwingi North(68,829) and in total Kitui county has 532,758 registered voters.
