Kenya Kwanza leaders have critisised President Uhuru Kenyatta over the rising food prices saying the handshake destroyed country's economy.

The leaders include Deputy President William Ruto’s running mate Rigathi Gachagua, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki and Meru Senator Mithika Linturi.

“The kitendawili mzee led to the high cost of living after joining our government. The price of Unga was Sh90 but it has now gone up to Sh230,” Gachagua said.

The leaders spoke during a Kenya Kwanza rally in Meru on Monday.

They were accompanied by South Imenti MP Kathuri Murungi,  Central Imenti MP Kirima Ngushine and politician Karambu Kailemia.

Gachagua said Uhuru and Azimio La Umoja flagbearer Raila Odinga destroyed the Kenyan economy.

Linturi asked the President to tackle the high cost of living before enticing Kenyans to vote for his preferred presidential project.

“As you go round the country seeking votes for Raila, also tell Kenyans why you have been a burden.

"But first, seek forgiveness over high fuel and food prices under your watch," he said.

The senator said the President has no authority to lecture Mt Kenya people on his preferred candidate.

He said he should leave the electorate to make free and informed decisions on the president they want come August 9.

Kindiki also told off the President saying Kenyans are not ready to be forced to vote for Raila.

"We want to tell our retiring President, who leaves office in the next 27 days that Kenyans are behind Ruto," he said.

The senator said Uhuru has declared that he will transverse the country campaigning for Raila but their only card is clinging onto fake opinion polls.

“They have been left with one weapon, to hoodwink Kenyans that Raila is ahead in every opinion poll. We won’t allow you to force us to vote for Raila,” he said.

Kirima said Kenyans have faith in Ruto and his bottom-up model will trickle developments to grassroots.
