Seven injured, 17 cows killed in Machakos road accident

Four of the victims were seriously hurt while three sustained minor injuries

Seven people were injured and 17 cows killed in an accident along Machakos – Kitui highway on Thursday morning.

Mwala subcounty police commander Ronald Kirui said the accident  involving three passenger vehicles occurred within Masii township at around 6.30am.

Kirui said the incident was reported to Masii police station as a serious injury road traffic accident.

He said the driver of motor vehicle was driving from Kitui towards Machakos.

"On reaching Mithini bridge next to Green Hub junction he hit a herd of cattle on his lane.

"A matatu, which was following closely, also swerved to the right and collided with an oncoming motor vehicle,” Kirui said.

The police boss said scores of injuries were reported as a result of the accident.

Independent sources told the Star that seven people were injured during the incident.

“Four of the victims were seriously injured while three sustained minor injuries,” a source said.

She said three cows broke their limbs after they were knocked down by the first vehicle.

The source, who declined to be named, said the vehicles were speeding when the incident occurred.

Kirui said the victims were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment while wreckages towed to Masii police station for inspection.

He said police have launched investigations into the incident.

Kirui however cautioned motorists against flouting traffic rules.

He said all road users must be disciplined and cautious to avoid exposing passengers and livestock to unnecessary dangers due to negligence.
