The month-long Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration began sluggishly on Monday in 120 registration centres in Kitui as the IEBC complained about a poor turnout.

IEBC county coordinator Gogo Nguma said that although registration clerks were available in three places in each of the 40 wards in the county, there was conspicuous voter apathy as the numbers of those who came to register as voters were low.

“The other challenge we are facing is that most wards in our county are too vast, thus the problem of residents reaching the registration centres.

"However, we have put in place a mobile timetable to move the clerks from one point to another so that we can reach more people,” Nguma said.

He was briefing newsmen at Huduma Centre registration point in Kitui on the first day of the exercise, which runs from October 4 to November 2.

“Only a negligible number of people has shown up to register as voters.

"I, therefore, call on all those who have attained the age of 18 and above and have ID cards or valid passports to come out in numbers and register early instead of waiting for the last-minute rush and risk missing out,” Nguma said.

According to IEBC data, Kitui county has 475,041 voters but projections are that 175,764 new voters could be registered by 2022.
