Pupils of Kalimamundu Primary School in Kyuso subcounty in Kitui on Wednesday received food donations to cushion them from starvation after some fainted on Tuesday due to hunger.

On Tuesday, Kyuso subcounty director of education Stephen Mulandi had appealed for food support.

Their hope was restored after four sacks of maize were delivered assuring the pupils of a lunch meal for the next few weeks.

The food donation was received by the school community led by the headteacher Caroline Mwangangi.

Most pupils from the school come from homesteads headed by grandparents as most of their single mothers have left to seek income in far areas like Garissa in the Northeastern region.

Mulandi sent an SOS to Kyuso Secondary School principal to make a food donation.

“Please note that the situation is so desperate that few of the pupils fainted this morning from hunger,” a part of the letter read.

Three bags were donated by Kyuso Boys Secondary School while the other bag of maize was purchased with money collected through WhatsApp funds raising.

An aspiring Kyuso ward MCA Kathi Muthui also appealed for food donation to the school via WhatsApp the same day.

He requested the school principal to liaise with the school board of management to offer food donations and remedy the situation.

Mulandi said the hunger situation was a result of the failed last March-May rains.
