Former Central Imenti MP Mwiti buried in Kaguma

Former Central Imenti MP Gideon Mwiti was buried on Tuesday at his home in Kaguma, Central Imenti.

Mourners hailed Mwiti as a visionary leader and a hardworking businessman.

Meru Senator Mithika Linturi said he bought his first TV set after Mwiti paid him Sh40,000 for work he had done.

Central Imenti MP Moses Kirima said Mwiti campaigned for him in 2007 when he unsuccessfully vied for MP.

"He was a changed man. Since I am a bishop, he called me and asked me to pray for him so that he could be saved," Kirima said.

Buuri MP Mugambi Rindikiri said people should seek divine intervention before they die.

Meru county chief of Staff, who represented Governor Kiraitu Murungi, said Mwiti vied for MP in 2013 using Kiraitu's APK party.

Former Meru Woman Representative Florence Kajuju said she served with Mwiti in the 11th Parliament and he was a vocal representative.

Jimi Wanjigi, through representative Samuel Mwirigi, said Mwiti was not only a respected businessman and politician but also a family man.

Eala MP Mpuru Aburi said Mwiti was a leader who loved to bring people together.

The former lawmaker who lost his seat in the last general election died suddenly at a city hospital. He was aged 57. His family said he had diabetes complications.

In 2015, Mwiti faced allegations of raping a woman in Nairobi. He denied three counts of rape, intimidation and assault.

Mwiti was charged alongside David Muchiri, a doctor that police accused of conducting an involuntary HIV test on the complainant.

The case was still ongoing and as of April this year. Mwiti had requested that the case be heard in open court, instead of virtually in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
