ODM has been registering 1,000 members daily since the party began a recruitment drive in Mt Kenya East on Monday, officials say.

The leaders said the move is a sign of party leader Raila Odinga's growing popularity in the region.

The officials who spoke in Runyenjes town on Wednesday were from Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties.

They spoke during the inauguration of newly elected officials.

Party Electoral Board chairperson Catherine Muma and party commissioner Emily Awita were also present.

Embu ODM chairman Moses Wamuuru said the recruitment drive will strengthen the party at the grassroots.

It will help form structures of the party and allow members to have a voice from as low as the polling stations.

“People of Mt Kenya seem to be more independent than it used to be and are making their own decisions. Records show that Mt Kenya registers 1,000 members per day something describing our party’s strength in the region,” Wamuuru said.

He also said ODM does not require to form a coalition with Jubilee despite party leader Raila Odinga's handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

ODM is a huge movement and has the capability of forming a government.

Wamuuru said they will instead consider working together as independent parties.

He said the Nasa coalition died in 2017 after it lost the presidential elections.

Wamuuru termed the parties leaving Nasa “crying babies” who are seeking attention in the world of politics.

“The only way we can help these parties to save their existence is through calling them to join ODM."

"I am telling them to stop complaining and instead work to build their parties so that they can gain something to negotiate with because they’ll have to rely on others,” he added.

Wiper has already left Nasa with Chama Cha Mashinani led by Isaac Ruto having also announced its intention to quit the coalition.

Muma said ODM is required to carry out grassroots elections in accordance with the Political Party’s Act.

The exercise takes place after every five years with this years’ election being late due to interruptions occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

ODM has four mainstream structures which represent the polling station, ward, constituency and the county levels.

The structures are made of 20 members, 20 women league, 20 disabilities league and 20 representatives for youths.

“I would like to congratulate Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties for their formed structures since it shows they are participating smoothly in their activities," Muma said.

"I also appreciate Meru county because they will form their structure for the first time since 2010 owing to disagreements in the activities,” she added.
