Two girls aged two and 17 years were defiled by an unknown person and poisoned in Kitui county on Monday.

The two were sleeping in their home in Thitha, Mwingi Central subcounty, when the perpetrator broke into their house.

The 17-year-old Form 2 student who survived said when the man broke into the house, she screamed but he choked her till she became unconscious and suspects she was defiled while insentient.

After waking up, she found a pesticide in the room and that's when she notified their mother of what happened.

“I woke up feeling unwell and informed our mother who rushed us to hospital, but my little sister succumbed before we got to the hospital,” the girl recounted.

Their mother, who runs a small business in Thitha, said she found the children sleeping and assumed everything was normal until the following morning when her daughter informed her what had happened.

Mwingi Level 4 Hospital nurse in charge Regina Kyambia confirmed that the minor had been raped and there were signs of poisoning.

Kyambia added that the girl, who was brought in a bad shape, is now in stable condition.

Mwingi Central subcounty police commander Peter Mutuma said the perpetrator is suspected to be the children's uncle and is still at large.

Efforts to arrest him have been launched.
