President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration is fast-tracking development projects in Meru in a move perceived to consolidate BBI support ahead of the June referendum.
Agriculture CS Peter Munya told coffee farmers that government officers have been instructed to report challenges bedevilling every stalled project. He spoke during a public participation forum on reforms to revive the agriculture sector.
Some of projects that have stalled for more than a year are the Timau potato plant, Mikinduri-Kunati Gacibine road, Mikinduri-Mulika-Ngage-Mukothima road, St Ann-Kagaene-Miomponi road and Rwanyange Sewarage.
“You have seeing government officers, including PSs, tour development projects. The President is committed to ensuring those stalled projects are completed. He has also instructed me to ensure farmers' fortunes change for a better future.
"We are streamlining all agriculture sectors from milk and egg imports, miraa to coffee and cotton. Though there are several cases launched to delay implementation of tea reforms, we are confident to triumph,” Munya said.
On Thursday, the Presidential Delivery Unit, led by Polycarp Onyango, accompanied PSs Kirimi Kaberia (Mining), Simon Nabukwesi (University Education) and Agriculture and Livestock's Amadi Mboga, as well as deputy head of Public Service Wanyama Musiambo, in touring several projects.
Kaberia told contractors he will lead them to any office that may have denied them a hearing to ensure they complete their work on time.
Some were reprimanded and told they risk being blacklisted if they continue failing to deliver as per the agreed terms.
"We want create multi-sectoral corporation to eliminate unnecessary and delay and wastage of public funds and complete projects in good time," Kaberia said.
Mboga said they are pushing contractors and every involved actor to ensure timely completion of projects.
Munya drummed up support for Building Bridges Initiative, saying it is meant to solve the atrocities committed against the people of Mt Kenya by addition of constituencies and more funds to the counties.
“No one knows about tomorrow. President Uhuru is the head and the neck cannot take control. Why is his deputy attacking him day in day out? We know many have not understood the contents of the BBI because of propaganda and lies spread by opposers.
"I'm a lawyer and frankly, the President has good will for Mt Kenya. The process to start sensitisation to the BBI will start soon after the document is distributed to everyone. I was in the select committee that drafted the 2010 Constitution in Naivasha. It is time to change the 20 per cent people were against,” Munya said.
