A man was shot dead at Ntangilia in Tigania East during a bandit attack as  insecurity escalates.

Peter Loolo was killed by attackers who are said to have brought their camels in Meru county for pasture as drought continues ravaging  parts of the country.

Loolo, 60, was walking from his farm towards his home when he was sprayed with bullets and died on arrival at Miathene Subcounty Hospital.

Tigania East subcounty police commander Peter Karanja told the Star that he has been camping at the scene together with multi-agency police officers and chiefs  until they will bring the culprits to book.

Karanja said they are investigating the incident. He said that they are yet to establish the motive of the killing.

He refuted claims that several goats were stolen from Meru herders yesterday night. However, he said 70 goats were stolen on Sunday but 55 were recovered.

Former Kenya Police Reservist Stanley Karithi said this was not the first incident to happen in Ntangila and Kandebene. He wondered why security apparatus are reluctant to return firearms to reservists in National Police Reservists in Tigania.

“We were to get back our firearms by last Monday but the area OCPD has not given them. Area resident Mzee James Kaindio and some other three herders have lost about 400 goats here. Two girls have been raped in three days, one at Lachathuriu and the other girl at Kandebene. One incident happened yesterday night,” Karithi said.

Another resident Charles Kaibi asked President Uhuru Kenyatta, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, area MP Gichunge Kabeabea, Women Rep Kawira Mwangaza and other leaders to intervene and save lives.

“The Kaindio family and other residents are languishing in poverty because of  cattle rustling. Where are our leaders?” he said.

In September last year, three police reservists were killed during another banditry attack.

They were shot dead at Kalua in Igembe Central during a retaliatory attack by bandits.

Then acting Igembe Central police boss Rashid Hulbale said two other reservists sustained gunshot wounds during the ambush.
