Forty victims of land grabbing from Embu, Meru and Kirinyaga are seeking the state's intervention, saying they have suffered injustices for 40 years.

They said they were evicted from their land by relatives and prominent people, including lawyers and politicians.

The victims said they have been to the courts but lawyers of the influential parties have colluded with judicial officers to deny them justice.

The Nyangi Ndiiriri Council of Elders organised a press conference on Tuesday for the victims, who said they had lost hope in the judicial system and government agencies.

Some of them threatened to take the law into their hands if the disputes are not resolved soon. They said they are ready to provide any documents needed if it will help them get help.

LIVES IN A SHANTY

“My brothers disinherited me after colluding with the police to have me arrested. Bhang was planted on me and as I was [thrown] in jail. They lied that I was dead and took over my land in Mbuvori, Embu North sub-county,” Mwaniki Njue said.

He said the issue has been in court since 1998. Njue said he was evicted after his brothers sold his land.

Njue said he and his family are so frustrated that he is thinking of taking the law into his own hands if he will not get back his land within a year.

Rose Nyagah from Runyenjes said she and her family were evicted from her deceased husband’s land four years ago after it was sold by a man claiming ownership.

Police showed up without a court order and threw her out. She has been living in a shanty along a road in Runyenjes ever since.

Another victim said a lawyer who was representing him turned against him and had the client's land registered in his name. The victim had given the lawyer his title deed pending the determination of his case.
