Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has ordered the transfer of all medical staff who have served more than a year at Malindi Subcounty Hospital.

Speaking in Kaloleni on Sunday, Mung’aro said the move will address laxity by staff at the public hospital.

He said the transfers should be effected by Tuesday this week.

Two weeks ago while on a tour of the hospital, Mung’aro came face to face with patients who had spent long hours waiting to be attended.

“The other day I received a text message from a patient at around 11am. The patient was complaining that they had not been served breakfast. I rushed to the facility. Imagine by 11am patients had not had breakfast and yet they needed to take their medication. This is inhuman and I have ordered the transfer of all the staff there,” he said.

Mung’aro further said he would make a follow-up on the health workers at their new work stations.

“Whether you will be posted to Bamba or whichever hospital, I will come there and if I find you out of duty I will dismiss you. If you are tasked with a responsibility, make sure you perform it well,” Mung’aro said

He said the drive would be extended to all health facilities in the county.

“You are not doing these people a favour. They are paying for these services and they deserve to be served with dignity and on time,” Mung’aro said.

He urged members of the county assembly to support him in streamlining service delivery in the county.

Mung’aro said the next group to pursue will be staff who steal medicine or divert them to private clinics and chemists.

Kilifi county assembly speaker Teddy Mwambire said the transformation of services in the county will start when the assembly starts sittings on September 4.

“We will support the governor by making sure we visit all projects undertaken by the government. We will make sure we do due diligence before any payment is made,” he said Mwambire.
