Pwani Oil Company, whose four oil brands were flagged by the Kenya Bureau of Standards for non-compliance with standards, has said their products are certified and safe.

Last week, Kebs flagged Bidco Africa, Pwani Oil, Kapa Oil and Menengai, and ordered them to recall some of their products from circulation for non-compliance with standards.

In a statement on Saturday, Pwani Oil director Rajul Malde said they had sent those four products to an independent laboratory, SGS, which confirmed the products had complied with standards.

SGS is a global and independent and K-accredited laboratory for testing.

Pwani Oil brands that have been flagged include Fresh Fri, Fresh Fri with Garlic and Salit.

The letter by Kebs said that four of Pwani Oil's brands which did not comply with the set standards should be recalled and removed from the supply chain from the outlets across the country.

Malde said Pwani Oil Company complied with the directive.

The oil manufacturer also said it immediately took a corrective action plan for the flagged products. The products were isolated and withdrawn and samples were sent for retesting to an accredited laboratory.

In a statement to newsrooms, Malde said the results received from the SGS laboratory confirm compliance with KS EAS 769:2019

"We reiterate that our manufacturing process for edible oils and fats has always adhered to the best industry practices regarding receipt and storage of raw materials, in-process monitoring, product quality control, and storage of the final product," he said.

The company also said it was ready to follow the process of testing to the satisfaction of Kebs to bring the process to its rightful conclusion and reassure consumers that the products sold are safe for human consumption.
