The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentist Union (KMPDU) Mombasa branch on Friday endorsed the ODM aspirant Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir as their preferred gubernatorial aspirant.

Mombasa was among the two counties in which the gubernatorial elections were postponed by the IEBC.

KMPDU chairperson Nassir Shaban said that they support the ODM aspirant because he has been at the forefront in finding solutions whenever they had disagreements with Hassan Joho’s government.

“We have worked with Nassir for a long time and we have proven that he is the only leader who is approachable and who has visions and plans for the city of Mombasa,” he said.

He said that the ODM aspirant has always been the first person they have been communicating with whenever they had a standoff.

KMPDU chairperson revealed that Nassir is the one who has been pushing Joho’s government to act whenever there is a crisis between the county government and the union, adding that he has averted the crisis more than three times.

The Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant had several meetings with the union to find solutions to their challenges and promised to promote doctors if given the opportunity of leadership.

“Among the plans that Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has for us as a union if elected is the opening of a policy for doctors where he will be consulting us on matters concerning the union.”

“He also has a plan to form a task force with the union where issues touching on doctors that are not directly addressed by the union and the county can be solved through the initiative,” he said.

Nassir said that he is not siding with any political party but Mombasa needs a good leader.

“Other people from different political parties have their opinion but they are not well organized and do not know where to start from,” he said.

“Nassir knows this town in and out, he understands the challenges we are facing and he has at all times been siding with us to defend us when he was a member of parliament.”

He said that the aspirant is the right leader who has been tried, tested, approved and confirmed by the union.

The union leaders called upon residents of Mombasa to make wise decisions ahead of the elections which are set to take place on Monday 29.

KMPDU chairperson said in the past years they faced a lot of challenges which in most cases led to them going on strike and that is why the coming elections need the participation of everyone.

“We want to inform the people of Mombasa that there are a lot of problems in the county which need our participation,” he said.

Shaban called upon voters to choose a leader of their choice and a leader who will help to bring solutions to challenges being faced in the region.

“Do not elect someone because he is affiliated with someone. If we elect our leaders, we need to ensure that we do not use emotions. A leader who is coming will have a lot of challenges, that is why we need to elect someone who we are sure will solve our problems,” he said.

He urged the political parties not to force voters on who to vote for.

“This is our time as people of Mombasa to ensure that we choose a leader of our choice, do not allow people from Nairobi to come and tell us who we are supposed to elect because if this happens and the problems start, we will have to stay with them for the next five years,” he said.

The union Treasury Elizabeth Khisa said that in the past years, doctors have not been paid and as of December 2021, there was a debt of Sh5 billion.

“We have so many pending debts which have not been paid, there is a cumulative debt of about 5 billion shillings which was supposed to be paid by December 2021,”

“This is why we want to inform people of Mombasa that good leadership will help in solving these problems, this is the right time to make the right decisions by choosing a good leader,” she said.
