Kilifi North MP Owen Baya and his Malindi counterpart Aisha Jumwa are fronting Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya as the Coast kingpin.

The duo said Mvurya has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills that could propel the region to greater heights.

Speaking in Kilifi on Sunday, Baya said Mvurya is the only governor from the region who has remained steadfast to the course of unity of the region.

“His track record speaks for itself. Under Mvurya, Kwale has seen development and enjoyed peace. We need to support him to take over from [former Kisauni MP] Karisa Maitha,” he said.

Baya said Amason Kingi and Hassan Joho cannot be trusted for the position.

“Kingi and Joho cannot match Mvurya’s track record. If they failed to perform at the county level, they will definitely not perform at the regional level.”

Jumwa said Mvurya was able to nurture his deputy for 10 years and is confident she will continue with his legacy that is why he is supporting her to succeed him.

Jumwa said she will take over from Mvurya as the Coast kingpin.

“We have seen how he has transformed the education sector in Kwale. He has even sponsored students from other Coast counties to study abroad. That is the leader the region wants,” she said

Since the death of Maitha in 2004, the Coast region has remained without a vocal political leader who can command the region in one direction.

Maitha was christened 'Mugogo wa Pwani' (the Coast kingpin) for his firm stand and dedication to the people of the region.

Ronald Gideon Ngala and former Bahari MP Jembe Mwakalu also held the position.
