Fear has engulfed a family at Bodo in Msambweni, Kwale county, after their son was abducted allegedly by security officers in the cold night of November 22.

Over 20 cases of enforced disappearances have been reported in the Coast region, according to Haki Africa NGO.

Armed men stormed the home of Masoud Mwarindano, 38, and took him away.

According to his uncle, Juma Hassan, the men used three vehicles.

It is said the unknown men first searched the house, turning everything upside down, before leaving with Mwarindano.

“They combed the place and seized mobile phones before they forcefully took him,” Hassan said.

The incident happened in front of his terrified eight children and wife.

Relative Saidi Bakari said it has been over five days and chances of finding Mwarindano are narrowing down.

Local police denied having been involved.

The wife said the men demanded her to remain silent and hand them clothes as they drove off with the husband.

“They asked for his clothes since he had put on a vest and a short and threatened to hurt us if we shouted,” she said.

The wife said Mwarindano is a business man.

She fears that her husband might be found dead following the rising cases of extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances.

The issue was reported to Kwale and Mombasa police stations.

In October, a 36-year-old man disappeared after he was allegedly arrested by police officers in Msambweni and bundled him in a Probox and drove off.

Haki Africa rapid response officer Mathias Shipeta strongly condemned the act.

He asked the Interior ministry to help the families trace back their loved ones, saying it is mandated to protect innocent lives.
