The government will build Ardhi House in Malindi at a cost of Sh40 million beginning January 2021.

Lands Chief Administrative Secretary Gideon Mung'aro said the aim is to bring services closer to the people and reduce the costs of traveling to Kilifi.

He spoke after touring the site where construction will be done.

Mung'aro said it was sad that currently people travel long distances from the remote areas of Malindi or Magarini to Kilifi to seek services.

Before the work begins, Mung'aro said they have been able to secure an office at one of the government buildings to begin operations as soon as possible.

"We want to open a registry here as we wait for the  Ardhi House next year due to the budget constraints. For now, services must go on. So, we are trying how we can open up this place so that the registry begins as we wait for the house," he said.

Mung'aro who was accompanied by Magarini MP Michael Kingi, Kilifi CEC Lands Maureen Mwangovya, Roads chief officer Kenneth Kazungu and local administrators said the road will be tarmacked to ensure it's in a good state.

''We have agreed with the governor that as we build the Ardhi House they build the road. That's why he sent his officers here,'' he said.

The CAS said their aim is to ensure the temporary office is opened by December  because it is important for the government.

Kingi thanked the Lands ministry for the initiative, which will reduce the difficulties faced by locals seeking land ownership documents.

Mwangovya thanked the national government for establishing the lands registry office in Malindi.
