A senior police officer demanded a Sh10,000 bribe from a man he had arrested as he demolished a house near a bar, a Mombasa court heard on Tuesday.
The bribe was to facilitate the release of Joseph Chumba, a resident of Kisauni, chief magistrate Edna Nyaloti was told.
Chumba was arrested and remanded at Kiembeni police station but was never told what crime he had committed, an EACC officer identified only as Murage told the court.
Chumba, a member of Nguu Tatu, an association of Kisauni squatters, said he was later taken to Shanzu Law Courts and released on a Sh5,000 bail. No charge was preferred against him.
Shikondi was arrested on January 8, 2018, at Billionaire Club in Bamburi by detectives who had laid a trap.
After his arrest, Shikondi was disarmed and detained at Port Police Station before he was released on a Sh50,000 bail.
Murage said he was assigned four investigators with whom he met at Billionaires club where the bribery was to take place.
“Your honour, we positioned ourselves and we saw the witness issuing money to the suspect,” he told the court.
A pistol, 13 rounds of ammunition and Sh8,000 were recovered from him. The balance of Sh2,000 was to be paid after negotiation, the complainant had told the EACC officer.
Nine witnesses will testify on May 29 when the hearing resumes.
