Education officials will this week officially launch investigations into alleged sexual misconduct and drug abuse in a prestigious private school in Nyali, Mombasa.

Some parents and guardians of the school, which offers the British education system, complained to a human rights lobby about the issues.

Commission for Human Rights and Justice then wrote to the county director of education Moses Makori calling for investigations.

Makori, however, referred the Star to the Nyali subcounty director of education Mary Kanyoro saying no such letter has reached his office.

The Star is in possession of the letter dated March 1, written by CHRJ which has a stamp that shows it was received by the county director of education’s office on March 1.

It was also received by the Coast regional coordinator of education’s office.

“No complaint has been brought to my office. None of us from the office have visited that school. I can say that with authority because my senior officers are in Kwale for the entire week.

“I am not aware of that letter but if I get a copy then I can investigate. I will get it (a copy of the letter) from him and then I carry out my investigations,” Kanyoro said on Saturday.

This followed reports that some officials from the Education ministry visited the school on Thursday and Friday.

REFUTED CLAIMS

Earlier, an official from the school had refuted claims of sexual activities being done in the school’s washrooms.

The official, who did not want to be quoted, said any disciplinary cases are usually dealt with according to the school’s policies and regulations.

They denied there are sexual activities taking place.

“We are a very small institution and we are totally vigilant. In a day there are four teachers and four prefects on duty. Any time that a child goes to the washroom there is always somebody around,” explained the official.

On drugs, they said every institution has its own challenges and that they have their own way of dealing with challenges.

She said a student was once suspended for buying cookies from an outsider two years ago.

The cookie was suspected to have been laced with drugs. “These (allegations) are totally malicious,” they said.

Two people have recorded statements at the Nyali police station over the sex allegations which the ministry said remain mere allegations.
