An aspiring Kilifi South MP wants agriculture in the constituency improved through irrigation. Amina Nassor said there is great potential in the constituency as the land is fertile but farmers do not have incentives.
This year, more than 150,000 Kilifi residents are depending on relief food due to crop failure. Nassor on Wednesday said this is sad in the modern era where technology can improve yield.
“Agriculture in Kilifi South is increasingly diminishing due to lack of incentives, despite having the potential to feed the whole county,” she said. Nassor said the National Irrigation Board should be better managed to avoid residents’ over-reliance on relief food.
“It is only now that the rains have started. Many farmers did not harvest because there was no rain when it was needed most,” she said.
