Magarini residents have set tough conditions for a company planning to set up a multimillion-shilling golf club at Mamburui. They have asked Mamburui Golf Company to compensate them and allocate them land with title deeds if they are evicted.
The residents said investigations should be conducted to establish the exact boundaries and whether the title deeds being held by the company are genuine.
They said unless the company fulfils their demands, they will not move from their original homes. The residents were speaking during a meeting called by Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi to resolve the dispute between the affected families and the company at Misufini on Tuesday.
Kingi said it will be difficult for people to move out of their homes without a clear agreement on how they will be resettled and the time it will take. Kamene Shilingi, a representative of a committee formed to resolve the dispute, said the affected people want to know their fate once they move out of their homes. Mamburui Golf is in dispute with families living on the land it intends to use. The golf club will be located past the Sabaki Bridge towards Mamburui in Misufini area.
The work was to begin last year. Schools, dispensaries and churches will also be affected. The company has ownership documents of the land.
The residents said they have been living as squatters for many years. Kingi assured them he will ensure everyone is compensated and allocated alternative land with a title deed to avoid conflicts in the future. He told the residents to cooperate with the company.
