Malindi MP Dan Kazungu has set aside Sh35 million to upgrade the town’s infrastructure. The plan includes marking all tarmacked roads in the town, posting road signs and filling potholes. Road marking is in progress and starts at the Malindi Marine Park, Casuarina and will go up to the central business district.

Speaking at Casuarina on Thursday, Kazungu said the markings will reach the boundary of his constituency on Malindi-Mombasa highway and Lamu road. The legislator said he also plans to put up a large billboard at Msabaha and Sabaki bridge, with a welcoming message for tourists visiting the resort town. He said Sh15 million will be used on billboards, and Sh5 million to mark roads and fill potholes. Another Sh5 million will be spent on roadside benches and a similar amount on dumpsite.

“We came up with the cleanup programme that will see beaches being cleaned twice a week,” he said. The cleanliness and safety measures plans will be implemented with the help of Kenya Wildlife Service, hoteliers, and other stakeholders. This will be the second phase of transforming the resort town, which was once rated as the best tourism destination. In the first phase, Kazungu launched a security programme at the beach to ensure the tourists are safe and free from harassment.

A committee was formed in partnership with stakeholders who came up with a security team made up of 20 people. “We are also coming up with a master plan of Malindi with the help of Ministry of Lands and Urbanisation to have proper structures as per the standards required in the status of the resort town,” he said.

Kazungu said there are plans to set up a website to market Malindi. His announcement comes four days after he hired a lawyer to represent thousands of squatters in land cases in his constituency.
