MORE than 6000 families affected by tribal clashes six months ago in Tana Delta have been hit by a double tragedy after their homes were swept away by floods. The victims lost all their properties during the deadly clashes that left nearly 200 people dead five months ago.

They returned home only to get another tragedy after river Tana burst its banks last week. Currently both communities affected are camping at temporary camps near Wema area which is on a higher ground

Among the areas worst hit include Tawakal, Abageda, Maziwa, Wilkon, Kulesa Isabel, and Mikameni villages. Outgoing deputy county commissioner of Tana delta David Kiprop said there were other villages which were marooned and in accessible.

Speaking in Garsen he said villages had to be evacuated to safer grounds as the situation was worse. He said the areas which were marooned include Mnazini, Shirikisho, Danisa, Babani, Sera and Lessa.

Area Member of Parliament Ibrahim Sane toured the victims at their IDP camps yesterday and termed the tragedy as serious and which required urgent attention. The legislator called on the government to intervene and assist the victims who were living in pathetic condition at the camps.

“There is urgent need of special attention from the government in this district , these people just returned recently after clashes and have got another tragedy of the floods,’’ he said.

There are also fears of famine and outbreak of diseases following the floods as the victims have not engaged in any economic activity ever since the tragedy begun.
